A video being shared on TikTok shows a convoy of motor vehicles moving past a crowd of people. The crowd is chanting “William Ruto” and “UDA”.

The captions on the video reads “Raila Chased like a MBURUKENGE DOG by the police in Jacaranda ground rally.”

The video is dated 29 January 2023, the same day that Raila Odinga held a rally at Jacaranda grounds in Nairobi.

We conducted a search to see if Odinga was actually chased at Jacaranda. We found no such account in any credible news reports and social media channels that carried the event.

However, looking for the phrase “Raila heckled UDA” on Facebook brought up the same video, dated 2 March 2022, which predates the January 2023 Jacaranda rally.  The post reads, “Raila heckled and chased like Burukenge in Molo, Nakuru County. He’s hiding in a wheat plantation!”

We changed our search to use the keywords “Raila” and “Molo”, and saw that the same video had been shared multiple times on 2 March 2022. On the said day, Odinga had attended a rally in Molo, Nakuru County.

The video existed in March 2022 and could not, therefore, show Raila being heckled at Jacaranda Grounds, Nairobi on 29 January 2023. In addition, all the videos visible appear on Facebook between March 2 and 3, 2022 making it highly likely the incident happened then.

Conclusion

A video being shared on TikTok showing a moving motorcade and a crowd shouting “Ruto” and “UDA”. A caption with the video states that the footage shows Raila Odinga being chased at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi, at a rally held in January 2023.

A Facebook search of the video shows that it existed in March 2022 and therefore could not depict events in January 2023.  The video also appeared on the day when Raila Odinga held a rally in Molo a claim made in many of the video captions. The claim that the video shows Raila Odinga was chased at a Jacaranda Grounds rally is false.
