These logs were done on 10 August 2022, the day after voting, covering four of the 17 Nairobi constituencies: Dagoretti South, Westlands, Ruaraka and Kasarani.

Dagoretti South Constituency

0817 hrs: Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute serves as the official tallying center for Dagoretti South Constituency. Only three wards (out of five) have arrived with their Form 34As. Projections pit Jubilee Candidate (and former 2013 area MP) Dennis Waweru with an early lead against the incumbent MP John ‘KJ’ Kiarie, as of the time I leave the center.

Westlands Constituency

1153 hrs: Kenya Teachers Training College is Westlands Constituency’s tallying center. The Form 34As from polling stations are still streaming in. The current MP, Timothy Wanyonyi, has taken an early lead in the tallied votes so far. Nonetheless, a Presiding Officer from the Visa Oshwal Primary School polling station, who has been here from 7.00 a.m., cuts a frustrated figure. “The chances of us sleeping here are very high. The process is quite slow,” he says. Edwin Kegoli, who was the Presiding Officer at Kangemi Social Hall polling station, talks about his first-time experience working in the said role. With a degree in Political Science and Public Administration, he tells me he took this job to have a better grasp of how elections are conducted. He also says he harbours political ambitions.

Ruaraka Constituency

1310 hrs: It is every man on his own at Stima Members Club, which is Ruaraka Constituency’s tallying center. With long queues, and 193 polling stations (only 30 have been tallied so far), every Presiding Officer has to physically man and move their sealed ballot boxes. Otherwise, if left unattended in the queue, other Presiding Officers could take advantage and jump ahead in line. Thomas Joseph ‘TJ’ Kajwang’, who is the incumbent MP (first elected in the 2013 General Election), has taken an early lead.

Kasarani Constituency

1356 hrs: Doubling up as the County Tallying Center (Nairobi), the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani has one of the longest queues I have spotted thus far. Candidates are here waiting for the results as more Form 34As from polling stations arrive at the center in buses. However, projections show that Independent Candidate and Sportpesa CEO, Ronald Karauri, is taking a lead amongst his competitors for the Kasarani MP seat as of press time.
